My thoughts post 3110/3300x release vids

Having watched a number of the release reviews of the new Ryzen chips what have I learnt?

  1. For the money they're solid gaming chips and, 1600AF aside, if your only gaming at 1080p probably a good choice at the budget entry point.

  2. If you want to do more than game there are some catches and you might want to consider a few more cores.

So that could work if your in the market for a new build gaming PC at the $600 - 800 price point. Which I am, But...

Reviewers (Paul's Hardware and Hardware Unboxed - thanks guys) highlighted that the new B550 board will not be backward compatible with earlier 2000 chips, and (currently) AMD are saying that older boards (B450 et al) will not get a bios update for the new Ryzen 4000 chips. Which for me at least means waiting for the new boards to ensure there is an upgrade path.

Where does this leave me? I'm definitely waiting for the B550 and will buy either a 3300x or 3600 with that in June - unless the new Intel reviews reveal a new value/performance combination that's even better. This then leaves an easy upgrade option for Ryzen 4000 towards the end of the year.

This then gives me a month or so to finish a current arcade build - so out with the router and off to eBay for a good deal on an old i5!
